As we stumble through states of shock, horror, and confusion in the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, we continue to hold the victims and their families in our thoughts and prayers. While it may prove impossible to make sense of an act so void of logic and justice, our only sense of solace may be found in efforts to safeguard the health and wellness of our college family.
One such effort is to review the safety procedures for our college. It is important for students, faculty and staff to know what to do and where to receive information when an emergency occurs on campus.
If you need to report an emergency from a CCSJ phone, you must first dial 9 for an outside line. Then dial 9-1-1.
If an emergency situation other than smoke or fire in the building occurs, listen and follow the emergency instructions given over the CCSJ emergency speaker system.
Information on major emergency situations will be sent via email to CCSJ accounts and posted on the CCSJ homepage.
Full Safety Procedures are available on the campus security web page
http://www.ccsj.edu/life/security.html and on the orange laminated Safety Procedures card located on campus bulletin boards and outside of the Dean of Students office (room 275).
Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to contact Drew Hays, Dean of Students in room 275, call (219) 473.4222, or email
ahays@ccsj.edu, and/or Bruce Alexander, Director of Security in room 607, call (219) 473.4335, or email
balexander@ccsj.edu for additional information.
Lastly, if you -- or someone you know -- are going through a difficult situation, please know that you have a college family at CCSJ that cares. In addition to the administrators listed above, you can find assistance through the myriad of student affairs offices on campus. We also have contacts for referrals should you desire support outside of the college community.
Know that at Calumet College of St. Joseph, you are more than our student, staff member, or faculty – you are family.
Take care,
Drew Hays,
Dean of Students
